Spice It Up: How to Avoid "Milky White Chicken"

by Coach Debbie

Sometimes my siblings and I will joke on the foods our mom made us eat as kids.  It never fails; we always remember her “milky white chicken.”  You know, the kind of chicken that is simply cooked without any flavor added.  It’s just plain old chicken.

You already know you’re supposed to eat healthy.  Salmon and broccoli.  Ground turkey on salad.  Chicken and asparagus.  If we’re honest, that can get REALLY boring after a while, which then means we are less likely to eat it because we are so sick of eating things that are so bland.

And each meal becomes a version of “milky white chicken.”  Yuck.

How do we get healthy foods to taste just as good as junk without adding chemicals, sugar, sodium, and all things bad?  I am a big fan of spices!   I dare you to hit the baking aisle this week and select some seasonings that are new to you!

My favorite spices are Mrs Dash because they are sodium-free and are already mixed up for me.  Flavors include:

  • Lemon Pepper
  • Steak
  • Tomato Basil Garlic
  • Garlic & Herb
  • Fiesta Lime
  • Chicken
  • Hamburger
  • Southwest Chipotle
  • Italian Medley
  • Caribbean Citrus
  • Onion & Herb
  • Extra Spicy
  • Spicy Jalapeno

I’ll sprinkle these on our meat as well as our vegetables to really shake up the taste of foods we eat on repeat.

Sauces and dressings can be a little bit trickier to navigate as they often contain a lot of sugar / sodium / gluten / bad oils.  I try to study the nutrition label on the back and limit our intake.   But there are some great options that make meals even more appealing.

Why not try some of these with your next entrée (especially salads):

  • Lemon Juice
  • Lime Juice
  • Salsa (go for low-sodium)
  • Grapeseed / olive / avocado oil
  • Hummus (go for gluten-free)
  • Avocado / guacamole
  • Sriracha / hot sauce
  • Coconut aminos

Flavoring our foods doesn’t need to be complicated.  And we want to avoid adding unhelpful ingredients.  Let’s shake up our “milky white chicken” meals this week!

We love to hear from you!  What are some of your favorite sauces and spices?
