Coach Emily Answers Your Questions

As Momsanity Coaches we try to be as transparent as possible about well…just about everything.  Even still there is never a shortage of questions when we open up a window into our everyday lives.  So here is MORE about everything you want to know about Coach Emily:

What does a typical day of eating look like for you?

I am a pretty habitual eater.  I don’t crave variety except for at dinner and when we go out to eat.  Here is what I ate today:

5:30 Am:  1 LARGE cup of coffee with a splash of almond milk and liquid stevia plus a handful of blueberries

8:00:  Post-Workout- 2 eggs plus 3 egg whites cooked with mushrooms, 1/3 cup oatbran with another small handful of blueberries, cinnamon and a packet of Truvia.  More coffee… maybe 2 cups.

11:30:  Mixing bowl salad with 3 kinds of greens, celery, cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, jalapenos, hummus, nuts, chicken and a few grapes

2:30:  1 Scoop NP Pro blended with ice, greens, almond milk, a few capella drops and a tsp of coconut oil or sun butter and a small apple.

6:30:  2 Trader Joe’s Chicken Sausages and a pile of sauteed kale with mushrooms.

9:00:  2 squares sugar-free dark chocolate with almonds

What is your weekly workout schedule like?

Unlike my nutrition, I get very very bored, very very quickly with workouts.  I try to never repeat the same workout more than once per month or so.  I write down random things on small pieces of paper when new fun ideas come to mind.  I love crazy combinations of both weights and plyometrics exercises (check out some of my Momsanity Sisterhood workouts).  I love to do Coach Debbie’s videos as it’s weird for me to be coached by my own voice.  I vary things so much that there really isn’t a “normal” here.  I exercise for about 30 minutes 5 times per week.  I try not to get too hung up in the details as I spent MANY years doing that, it’s liberating to just do what I feel like that day.  I go to the gym one day per week to do heavy lower body exercises and go to hot yoga once per week to re-store my energy and get a good stretch.  I also meet a couple great friends once per week for sprints and plyometrics.  I workout first thing in the morning before “Mommy duty” begins.

What Size Weights do you lift?

I’ve learned as I get older to listen closely to my body.  If I’m not feeling it that day then I don’t go SUPER heavy.  Lifting heavy weights makes me feel strong and confident.  The day I started lifting REAL weights, was a pivotal day for me.  I learned that strong >skinny and I love it!  SO… if we’re talking about dumbbells I use anywhere from 15 to 40 pounds depending on the exercise/muscle group.  I love nothing more than to feel SPENT at the end of my workout!

How do you deal with stress?

Spending time in the Word and in prayer is my greatest source of stress relief, even though it’s naturally not the first place I turn.  God is working on me!   Exercise is definitely a huge source of stress relief. I also love lunches and walks with good friends and talking things over with my husband.  I’m an extrovert and need to talk to real-live people regularly to regroup.  I sometimes find being a stay-at-home/work-at-home Mom very isolating.

As I get older God continues to teach me that I don’t need to know everything or have all of the answers and that life is genuinely HARD the more I accept that the less stressed I feel. I tend to be overwhelmed somewhat often because I have a ton on my plate (by choice).  I have a hard time saying no, not because I’m afraid to, but because there are so many awesome things to do in this life!  I also like to getaway in nature every couple of months for a “re-set”.

What is your go-to meal when you haven’t prepared?

I keep Trader Joe’s Fire Roasted Peppers and Onions in my freezer at all times along with Chicken Sausages and Costco Salmon Burgers.  I also purchase bagged greens like kale, chopped cabbage or broccoli slaw weekly that I can quickly saute.  I’m a huge fan of 10 minute dinners!  For quick grab snacks I’m a huge fan of NP Pro shakes, bars, and brownies and Dale’s Raw Food Protein bars.

What do you do when you have a break in your day?

I work through Adler’s nap times and in the afternoons while a sitter watches him.  I often talk to nutrition clients while folding laundry or prepping dinner.  I’ve been a big multi-tasker since I was a child.  I love to take a few minutes to read a blog post I’ve booked marked.  Occasionally I’ll crawl in my bed and read my Bible  then take a quick nap in the middle of the day while Adler is napping which is truly heavenly.  I LOVE pleasure reading, but rarely get a chance to do it these days.

How do you prioritize time with your husband?

We are both super busy.  We could literally work all evening every evening and all weekend every weekend (we both do lots of online projects both together and individually) if we wanted to- and we both love to work because we love our work.  That said, we have been married 9 years and have learned a lot during that time.   We do a pretty good job of prioritizing our marriage and spending quality time together and also recognizing when we are slipping in this area.  Almost every single time that we begin to have more frequent arguments it’s a result of not spending enough time together.  Our communication skills have improved dramatically and we are able to talk about difficult subjects without fear of anger, rejection or silence.  We are far from perfect, but with open lines of communication everything is easier.  We realize that love and respect are absolutely required for a marriage to thrive.

We eat dinner together almost every night at the table.  We pray together.  We read scripture together.  On Wednesday evenings we spend a distraction free hour together doing a devotion and just catching up.  We text and talk during the day when possible.  We make time for a bi-weekly date night that is full of conversation (and wine).

Speaking of….Do you call him Dr. Wiggy?

I call him Wiggy.  I call him Dr. Wiggy for fun when he is putting his “game face” on and preparing for a presentation/news event etc. Some people think my husband is intimidating (because he is a doctor and nice looking?) which makes me laugh- he is so down to Earth, humble, loving, and just the right amount of playful.

I have called him Wiggy since the day I met him.  It’s been his nickname since he was a baby and everyone calls him that.  It’s weird when people refer to him as “Weston” or “Wes” (his least favorite) or “Dr. Saunders”.  If you see us at Costco it’s ok to call him Wiggy, really

What is a Momsanity Coaches meeting like?

Well… picture multiple screaming toddlers and lots of technical difficulties while Coach Kate is trying to manage her pregnant belly and I’m wearing my breast pump while Coach Debbie is running in the door from chasing kids.  It’s chaotic multi-tasking at it’s best.  Somehow by the grace of God we pull it all together    God truly pulled the three of us together and I could not have hand-picked a better team.

So there you have it… a little glimpse into my world!  Got more questions for the coaches?  Post on Facebook!!!
