Lazy, Unconcerned and Stupid

by Coach Debbie

Preface: Reader, I know you considered not clicking the link to read this because you have stuff to do today.  In case you’re pressed for time, and only have time to read this in the bathroom, just read the last paragraph and be on your way.  For those with 2.5 minutes, read on…

“Be still and know that I am God.”  Ever read that in your Bible (it’s from Psalm 46:10, which is about the middle of the Bible)?  I’m pretty sure I’ve read it 512 times and I’ve always liked it.  Something about that phrase has this gentle yet giant thing going for it.  I remember doing a small Bible Study with some girls in college and our leader asked us to share what we thought that meant; “What does it mean to be still and know that He is God?”  What is your answer?

The transliteration reads this way:

“God I am that and know!  Be still!”

“Be still” when translated means this:

  • Cast down
  • Let fall
  • To let hang down
  • To be relaxed, especially the hands
  • Not putting forth exertion
  • It expresses the idea of leaving matters with God, or of being without anxiety about an issue

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.

In silent submission, let us worship and trust our Protector and Provider.  May we stand in awe of the true and mighty God, who is always with us.

Here’s what “BE STILL” does N-O-T mean ever ever:

  • Be stupid
  • Be unconcerned
  • Be lazy
  • Be inactive
  • Be a frozen statue
  • Do nothing

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.

Here’s what my research of this powerful verse says “BE STILL” does mean:

  • It’s not up for debate
  • It’s divine dependence
  • Unlike God, we are finite
  • Relax, go limp, chill out, enjoy calm confidence in Him
  • Don’t flinch in your faith with God
  • Have a quiet soul
  • Remember His past faithfulness

We always have access to His peace and rest, regardless of circumstance.  Let’s cooperate with Him in hardships.

Mark 4:39 is when Jesus commands the thrashing waves, “Hush, be still.”  He is saying this to our hearts.  He is able to calm us.  We are to be obedient and chill out.

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.

“Know that I am God” = “See, I’m God.  You are not.”  Look at what He’s done and yet we doubt His power, His presence, His passion.  He’s commanding us to NOT be fearful, to NOT be impatient, to NOT be restless.  HIS will be done, not ours.  Trust His plan.  Acknowledge that HE IS GOD.  He does whatever He pleases, but because He is faithful it all works out in the best way possible.

Mom, your days are long and busy and your hair is turning gray.   Instead of being busy, nonstop and always on the go…..be still.  Instead of trying to do it all, be it all, have it all….be still.  Push back against all the distractions and to-do’s, PUSH BACK.  God has ordered us to just freaking stop for a minute.  Breathe.  Sit down.  Close your eyes.  Talk in regular language to the Father who stops everything to hang on your every word.  He is closer than a whisper.  He loves you with an everlasting love that is so mysterious.  KNOW beyond a shadow of a doubt that He is God and doesn’t require your assistance in keeping the planet spinning.  Trust that He is a good, real God who is very in charge with your best interests in mind always.

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.
